Record Chinese Gold Imports Fuel Bullion Buying Spree
China's gold imports have surged to record levels this year, exceeding 1,000 tons through August. This surpasses the country's total purchases for all of 2025, driven by a stronger yuan, lower international bullion prices, and persistent investment demand.
The combination of these factors has accelerated buying in China, which is now the world's largest gold-consuming market. Domestic gold prices have remained slightly above international benchmarks, creating an incentive for banks and other authorized buyers to bring more bullion into China.
Investors are also increasing their exposure to gold, with Chinese gold ETFs adding about 44 tons this year, a 18% increase from the beginning of the year. The People's Bank of China has continued to accumulate gold, recording its largest monthly purchase since 2023 in August and maintaining its buying streak for nearly two years.
The central bank's purchases, combined with private investment demand, make China an increasingly important source of physical demand. With over 1,000 tons imported in eight months, this year's purchases are already ahead of the entire previous year, well before the final quarter.
