Red Sea Blockade Threatens Fragile Oil Recovery
The recent escalation of tensions in the Red Sea has disrupted global oil flows, threatening the already fragile recovery in energy flows. The Houthi militia's blockade on Saudi vessels seeking to pass through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait has complicated global oil trade routes.
After the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Saudi Arabia's Yanbu export hub became a primary outlet for crude exports, with over 5 million barrels per day being shipped to Asia. However, nearly four-fifths of these shipments transited through Bab el-Mandeb, which is now blocked.
The logistical complications are significant: vessels carrying Saudi crude to Asia must now cross the Suez Canal and circumnavigate Africa, adding at least four weeks to a typical tanker journey. This will sharply increase freight and insurance costs.
