Rising Yields and Crude Oil Send U.S. Stocks Lower Amid Inflation Concerns
U.S. stocks closed lower on Monday as investors navigated a challenging combination of rising Treasury yields and sharply higher crude oil prices.
The 10-year yield surged above 5%, increasing by 4.7 basis points to 5.008%. Higher yields can weigh heavily on growth and technology shares, particularly in the current environment where concerns about inflation and increased costs are already elevated.
Crude oil futures experienced a significant surge, jumping $4.46 or 4.4% to $105.85 per barrel. This increase raises concerns about the impact of higher energy prices on businesses and consumers.
Energy shares were among the top performers, with Occidental Petroleum rising 2.82%, Chevron gaining 2.64%, Shell advancing 2.59%, and Exxon Mobil increasing 2.57%. However, cryptocurrency-related shares faced significant pressure, with Coinbase plummeting 10.10%, Strategy falling 5.36%, Grayscale Bitcoin Trust declining 3.65%, and Robinhood dropping 3.39%.
The Federal Reserve's interest rate decision, scheduled for tomorrow, is a key event that investors are closely watching. Market participants anticipate a 25-basis-point increase in the Fed's benchmark interest rate.
