Rural Economy Contracts Amid Farm Cost Pressures
Rural bankers are voicing growing concerns over the farm economy, citing higher fuel and fertilizer costs as major challenges. According to Creighton University's September Rural Mainstreet Index, the region is experiencing economic contraction, with a reading of 44.7 down from 50.3 in August.
Economist Ernie Goss points out that while stronger grain prices offer some optimism, higher input costs are currently outweighing this positive trend. A significant majority of bankers identified fertilizer costs as a major concern, with 53% pointing to this issue and 47% highlighting higher fuel prices.
The farm equipment sales index fell to 25, marking the 37th consecutive month below growth-neutral levels. Meanwhile, 79% of bankers stated that tariffs are negatively impacting their local agriculture and livestock economies.
