Russia Assembles Shadow Fleet to Bypass EU LNG Ban

Russia is preparing to circumvent the European Union's ban on its liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports set for January 1, 2027. A 'shadow fleet' is being assembled by purchasing aging gas carriers and commissioning new vessels at a cost of roughly $300 million each.

The shift in strategy signals Russia's determination to maintain its position in global energy markets despite intensifying Western restrictions. By acquiring decommissioned ships older than 19 years, Moscow aims to adapt to changing market conditions and retain its LNG exports.

The creation of a shadow fleet may deepen international tensions as Western governments consider further measures to counter Russia's attempts to circumvent sanctions.
