Russia Bolsters Ship Security as Drone Attacks Disrupt Grain Exports
Russia has taken steps to enhance security for commercial shipping in the Azov-Black Sea basin following an escalation of maritime drone attacks, Reuters reported on August 3. The country's Transport Ministry established a specialized task force to identify new logistics routes and shift cargo to alternative modes of transport.
A number of stevedoring companies have agreed to process additional freight volumes and accelerate shipment handling at regional terminals, working in conjunction with the Russian Defence Ministry to ensure navigational safety and protect commercial vessels operating within the Azov-Black Sea corridor.
The measures reflect growing concerns over deteriorating security along vital commercial shipping routes, with both Russia and Ukraine targeting each other's grain facilities and commercial vessels in the Black Sea. This has driven global wheat prices higher on international markets, with Russia's main grain lobby warning that Ukrainian drone strikes could soon halt Black Sea grain exports altogether.
