Russia Outmaneuvers Kazakhstan in Central Asia Wheat Market

Russia's wheat market is making inroads into Kazakhstan's traditional territory due to a combination of factors, primarily driven by favorable weather conditions and lower transportation costs. Kazakh officials have reported that farmers have threshed 13.5 million tons of grain, including wheat, with almost 40 percent of the land under cultivation remaining to be harvested.

The US Department of Agriculture recently revised its forecast for the 2026-27 marketing year, predicting Kazakhstan will export 9.5 tons of wheat out of an overall harvest of about 15 million tons. To protect domestic grain producers and processors, the Kazakh Ministry of Agriculture imposed a ban on Russian grain imports in July.

However, this move has inadvertently fueled high export prices for Kazakh wheat, making it less competitive against Russian wheat exports to Uzbekistan and Afghanistan. 'This fall, we could face a new wave of bankruptcies, plant closures, and layoffs, all due to our Ministry of Agriculture's decision to create a monopoly,' an analysis published by the Karavan news outlet stated.
