Ukraine has lost its position as the world's largest exporter of sunflower oil after holding it since 2005/06. According to data from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), Russia took over this leadership in the 2025/26 marketing year, exporting 4.2 million tonnes compared to Ukraine's 4.036 million tonnes.

This marks a significant shift in the global sunflower oil market, with Ukraine previously holding the top spot since the 2005/06 season. Russia's export figures have been steadily increasing, while Ukraine's exports declined from 4.744 million tonnes in 2024/25 to 4.036 million tonnes in 2025/26.

The USDA forecasts that Russia will continue to lead the market, with an expected increase in oil production to 7.806 million tonnes and higher export figures of 5.1 million tonnes for the 2026/27 marketing season. Ukraine's production is also expected to rise to 5.418 million tonnes, but its exports may not catch up.
