Russia Unveils Cutting-Edge Gas-Diesel Generator for Heavy-Haul Railway Fleet

The Kolomna Plant in Russia has successfully completed the acceptance trials of its new 16GDG gas-diesel generator, marking a major milestone in the modernization of the country's heavy-haul railway fleet. The new engine, designed for the 3TE30 mainline freight locomotive, boasts a high output and can operate on both diesel fuel and natural gas, reducing fuel consumption by up to 89% while maintaining full performance.

The 16GDG generator produces 3.3 MW of power and features advanced digital controls, including a fully electronic fuel and gas injection system that optimizes combustion and manages fuel delivery in real-time. The engine has been designed to operate for up to 40 years, reducing long-term maintenance and replacement costs.

The project reflects Russia's commitment to technological sovereignty and import substitution in critical transportation sectors, with every significant component of the generator manufactured domestically. The 16GDG is set to equip Russian Railways with a more powerful and cost-effective heavy-haul locomotive that can transport larger loads over extended distances at reduced operating costs.
