Russian Port Strikes Threaten Ukraine's Agricultural Exports with 50% Decline

Ukraine's agricultural exports are facing a significant downturn due to constant Russian attacks on Black Sea ports. According to Agriculture Minister Taras Vysotskyi, Ukraine's grain and oilseed exports could fall by roughly half in August to 1.5 million metric tons.

The Greater Odesa ports, which handled about 80% of Ukraine's agricultural exports before the current wave of strikes, have been paralyzed by Russian attacks.

Vysotskyi stated that rail and the Danube River are emerging as main alternatives to maritime shipping. In August, up to 48% of agricultural products will be exported by rail, while another 48% will go through the Danube.

Ukraine exported more than 3 million metric tons of agricultural products in July, but unless conditions at sea improve, August exports could total no more than 1.5 million tons. This would erode Ukraine's foreign-exchange revenue, with monthly losses estimated to be around $1 billion, compared to the pre-strike level of $2 billion.

The potential long-term losses are far greater, with Vysotskyi estimating that if the ports remain idle, Ukraine's exports could fall by about 30 million tons a year. This would amount to between $10 billion and $12 billion over a year.
