Russia's Blockade Threatens Global Food Security
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has severe consequences not only for its people but also for global food security. Russia's targeting of ports, shipping lanes, and agricultural infrastructure is crippling Ukraine's ability to export grain, causing a sharp increase in global food prices.
Ukraine was previously responsible for 15% of the world's corn, 10% of its wheat, and 50% of its sunflower oil exports. However, due to Russia's attacks, grain exports have halved compared to last year, with a projected loss of over 9 million tonnes of grain if Ukraine runs out of storage by October.
The EU's Solidarity Lanes have provided alternative routes for trade, but safe passage through the Black Sea is essential. The international community is urging Russia to respect maritime law and allow commercial vessels to navigate freely.
