Russia's War in Ukraine Threatens Global Food Security

Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine is having a devastating impact on global food security. The country, which provided 15% of the world's corn exports and 10% of wheat before the invasion, has seen its grain exports halved compared to last year due to Russian attacks. This disruption, combined with other crises such as the Middle East conflict, is pushing fragile economies to the brink, leaving millions who can least afford it facing soaring food prices and shortages.

The consequences of this situation extend far beyond Ukraine's borders. With 7.8% of the global population already facing hunger, the assault on trade routes risks tipping vulnerable regions into famine. The EU's Solidarity Lanes have provided alternative routes for Ukrainian exports, but safe passage through the Black Sea is still essential to prevent further worsening of the situation.

The international community must demand an immediate moratorium on strikes against grain infrastructure and ports, as well as safe passage for commercial vessels to restore trade. A full and unconditional ceasefire leading to just and lasting peace is also necessary to end the daily suffering of Ukrainians and ensure a stable global food system.
