Sandfire Resources Sees 294% Profit Surge on Copper Price Strength
Sandfire Resources (ASX:SFR), a copper-focused miner and member of the S&P/ASX 200 materials sector, reported a transformative year in FY2026. The company produced 154.2 kilotonnes of copper-equivalent metal from its low-cost MATSA and Motheo mines.
This strong output, combined with low costs and firm copper prices, led to a surge in statutory profit, which jumped 294% to A$354 million. Sandfire also repaid its debt, moved to a net-cash position of A$353 million, and paid its first dividend since 2021.
The company's fortunes rest on two key factors: production volume and cost control. With low-cost mines in Spain and Botswana, Sandfire is well-positioned to benefit from strong copper prices. However, the miner's earnings are highly leveraged to the copper price, which can be volatile, and it faces risks such as cost inflation and operational problems at its mines.
