Saudi Arabia Faces Dilemma in Military Response to US-Iran Conflict

Saudi Arabia is grappling with a difficult decision in its military response to the conflict between the United States and Iran, which has raised security risks and threatened the Kingdom's economic ambitions. The country initially sought to remain neutral after fighting broke out on February 28th but has since shifted its approach following attacks by Iranian-backed groups.

The conflict has exposed Saudi Arabia to growing security threats from these groups operating in both the north and south, raising concerns over the safety of critical infrastructure and the future of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030 programme. This ambitious plan aims to reduce the Kingdom's reliance on oil revenues by expanding other sectors of the economy and attracting foreign investment.

The conflict has also disrupted Saudi Arabia's energy infrastructure, with the Abqaiq oil processing facility being targeted again by drones launched from Iraq. The facility was heavily damaged in a 2019 strike that temporarily knocked out half of the country's oil exports, highlighting the vulnerability of its critical national infrastructure to attack.
