Saudi Arabia Prepares Ground Operation Against Houthi Forces in Yemen
The conflict in Yemen has escalated as Saudi Arabia reportedly prepares a ground operation against Houthi forces. On October 2, the air force of the Yemeni government camp, backed by Saudi Arabia, carried out as many as 20 strikes over three hours around Taiz. The raids targeted moving Houthi fighters, military vehicles, and equipment, but no casualty figures were released.
The Houthis are advancing towards strategic areas in Yemen, including Taiz, Marib, and Bab al-Mandab. Control of these regions would give them access to the Safer oil field and other energy resources, as well as key transport infrastructures. The occupation of high ground near Bab al-Mandab Strait would also provide favorable defensive positions and surveillance over shipping in the area.
The Saudi-led coalition has been responding to Houthi attacks with airstrikes and drone strikes. On September 24, the Houthis claimed two waves of attacks using drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles against Saudi targets. The Riyadh-led coalition said it had intercepted six missiles targeting Taif and Yanbu.
Saudi Arabia's partners have announced limited military support for their defense. A Royal Air Force Voyager tanker aircraft will support Saudi aircraft engaged against drones and missiles, while French President Emmanuel Macron has announced the deployment of military personnel, radars, and defense systems to protect the Yanbu energy site.
