Saudi-backed forces in Yemen have launched a major offensive to reclaim territory from Iran-backed Houthi rebels, particularly around the strategic Bab al-Mandab strait. Yemeni officials reported that coalition forces have retaken key towns, including Dhubab, Bab, and Hadeid, with government tanks and troops seen entering the areas. The push came amid a broader Houthi advance in southwestern Yemen, where the rebels captured the town of Turbah, further complicating the Saudi-led coalition's efforts.

The offensive involved 100 fighter jets providing air support, according to coalition spokesperson Maj Gen Turki al-Malki, who claimed the coalition had secured 'air protection' of the Bab al-Mandab strait and destroyed hundreds of Houthi targets. The U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, noted that Saudi Arabia has a right to defend itself after being attacked by the Houthis, though he declined to confirm whether the U.S. coordinated with the coalition.

The Houthis have intensified their attacks on Saudi Arabia, including strikes on oil infrastructure in Riyadh and Khurais, which they claimed caused large fires. The group also cut a vital supply route linking the besieged city of Taiz with Aden, further escalating tensions. Fighting in and around Taiz has resulted in significant casualties, with over 70 people killed in the past day alone.

The conflict has seen the Houthis gain control of strategic areas along the Red Sea coastline and the Bab al-Mandab strait, a critical chokepoint for international shipping. The Saudi-backed government has struggled to counter the Houthi surge, despite military support from Saudi Arabia. The Houthis have continued to target Saudi oil infrastructure, raising concerns about regional stability and global oil supplies.
