Saudi Request Postpones Iran-Gulf Talks on Hormuz Shipping Lanes
Talks between Iran and Gulf Arab states on temporary shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz have been postponed at Saudi Arabia's request, further escalating tensions in the region.
The delay was requested by Saudi Arabia due to continued attacks on its energy infrastructure by Houthi rebels aligned with Iran. The talks were intended to establish a temporary transit plan for vessels passing through the strait, which would allow Iran to impose transit fees and screen vessels. However, Gulf Cooperation Council members have demanded free passage for ships in principle.
The postponement of talks has led to concerns over crude supplies, with Brent crude rising above $108 a barrel as fears grow that a prolonged war in the Middle East could further tighten supplies of petroleum products including diesel.
