Saudi Strikes Intensify Conflict with Houthi Rebels in Yemen
The conflict between Saudi Arabia and Yemen's Houthi rebels has escalated further, with reports emerging of multiple strikes by Saudi forces on targets in Sanaa. The Houthis-affiliated channel Al-Masirah TV reported that 'Saudi enemy aircraft' hit Sanaa with 26 strikes on October 3.
The clashes between the two sides have intensified since July, when a fragile truce collapsed after Iran sent a plane to Sanaa carrying a Houthi delegation without seeking authorization from Saudi Arabia. The renewed fighting has worsened humanitarian conditions in Yemen, where three-quarters of the population is unable to meet its basic food needs, according to the World Food Programme.
The Houthis have launched attacks on oil facilities in Saudi Arabia as part of their campaign against Riyadh's involvement in the war in Yemen. They claimed responsibility for a refinery fire south of Riyadh on Saturday afternoon, although neither side has commented on the incident.
