Senator Pushes for Temporarily Suspending Gasoline and Diesel Taxes
Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has called on the government's economic managers to consider suspending the excise tax on gasoline and diesel, in addition to the existing suspension on kerosene and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). He made this appeal during a radio interview with dzBB, citing the rising oil prices that have surpassed $80 per barrel.
Gatchalian emphasized that diesel and gasoline are crucial for logistics companies, and their costs are ultimately passed on to food prices. He argued that suspending the tax, even temporarily, would provide relief while fuel prices remain high. However, he acknowledged that Finance Secretary Frederick Go had warned of potential revenue losses of up to P12 billion per month if the tax were suspended.
The senator also highlighted the impact on public transport drivers, particularly those operating jeepneys, which rely on diesel. While a fare increase of P1 has been granted, drivers and operators prefer tax suspension as a more effective solution. Gatchalian acknowledged the financial trade-offs but urged economic managers to weigh the broader impact on drivers and consumers.
