Senegal's Wheat Imports Surge Past 1M Tonnes

Senegal's reliance on imported wheat continues to grow, driven by rising demand and lower import prices. According to the National Agency for Statistics and Demography (ANSD), the country imported 982,106 tonnes of wheat in 2025, an 8.5% increase from 904,947 tonnes in 2024.

The data shows that per capita wheat consumption has increased by nearly 56% over 18 years, from 27 kg in 2002 to 42 kg in 2020. Lower import prices have also supported demand, with the average wheat import price falling from 276 CFA francs per kg in 2022 to 178 CFA francs per kg, a decline of nearly 36%.

The growth in milling capacity could support both domestic food production and regional trade. Senegal has added new mills, including one with the capacity to process 500 tonnes of wheat per day, completed by Moroccan industrial engineering company REMORA. This expansion is likely to boost exports, which reached 29,249 tonnes in 2021, with export earnings averaging about US$5.89 million over the period.
