Sensex Sinks 1000 Points Amidst Escalating US-Iran Tensions
Indian stocks suffered significant losses on Monday as escalating US-Iran tensions pushed oil prices higher. The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Sensex plummeted by over 1,000 points to 72,892.63, a decline of 1.36%. The Nifty 50 also fell sharply, dropping 313 points to 22,863.30 and reaching a near six-month low.
The surge in oil prices was triggered by concerns that ongoing tensions could disrupt regional oil supplies. Brent crude oil prices climbed over 1% to above $105 per barrel as investors sought safe-haven assets amidst the geopolitical uncertainty.
India, one of the world's largest importers of crude oil, is particularly vulnerable to higher oil prices. Rising energy costs could significantly inflate India's import bill and stoke inflationary pressures, according to Reuters.
