Shale Producers Find New Oil with 'Soap Cocktails'

U.S. shale producers are turning to advanced chemicals, known as surfactants, to boost oil production from existing wells in shale formations. These chemical mixtures help release oil trapped in tight and shale formations by loosening it from the rock and making it easier for oil to move through tiny spaces.

Chevron has developed a proprietary chemical technology that addresses the problem of only 10% of oil reaching the surface with fracking alone. The company's enhanced oil recovery manager, Johannes Alvarez, compares the process to washing grease off hands with soap and water: 'The right chemical mixture can help loosen oil from the rock and fractures so it can move more easily toward the well.'

As of July 2026, Chevron was using advanced chemicals in over 600 wells, primarily in the Permian Basin, where the company produces about 1 million barrels of oil-equivalent per day. The company has also expanded its use to other areas, including the Bakken and Argentina.

Other producers, such as Ovintiv, are seeing similar results with surfactant treatments, reporting a 9% improvement in oil productivity versus non-surfactant-treated wells. Diamondback Energy is also testing ways to increase recovery using enhanced oil recovery methods, including surfactants.
