Silver Demand Surges as AI Data Centers Boom
The silver market has seen a significant shift in demand due to the growth of artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. According to the Silver Institute's World Silver Survey 2026, industrial use accounts for roughly half of all annual silver demand. This year marks the sixth consecutive year of a supply deficit in the global silver market.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) projects that global data center electricity demand will nearly double between 2025 and 2030, with a 17% increase in 2025 alone. The AI-focused facilities have grown even faster than the overall category. To power these facilities, engineers choose silver over copper or aluminum due to its superior conductivity of electricity and heat.
The scale of investment is substantial, with the Goldman Sachs Global Institute estimating $7.6 trillion in total AI buildout spending between 2026 and 2031. The largest hyperscalers are projected to spend $5.3 trillion by 2030. This growth has led to a new demand pillar for silver, alongside solar and EVs.
While some investors may be concerned about the potential slowdown in AI investment, experts argue that much of today's spending is already committed under multi-year build plans. The root cause of this growth runs deeper than any one company's roadmap: increasing computing and electric power use worldwide.
