Silver Market Deficit Widens Despite Falling Solar Demand

The silver market is experiencing its sixth consecutive year of deficit, with a widening gap between supply and demand. The Silver Institute's World Silver Survey 2026 projects a market deficit of 46.3 million ounces (Moz) for 2026, an increase from the 40.3 Moz shortfall recorded in 2025.

The decline in solar demand is often cited as a reason for the silver market's struggles, but this narrative oversimplifies the issue. While solar installations continue to grow, the quantity of silver embedded in each panel has decreased due to manufacturers optimising paste loading and pursuing thrifting strategies.

Three structural forces are contributing to the persistence of the silver market deficit: investment demand is accelerating, above-ground stock depletion is reducing the available float, and mine supply is unable to respond to price signals. The majority of silver production is governed by the economics and expansion plans of zinc, copper, and lead mines, creating what analysts describe as structural supply inelasticity.
