Silver Miners ETF vs. Physical Gold Bullion: Which is the Better Buy?

Instruments
Gold
Share

Investors have two primary options when it comes to exposure to precious metals: holding physical gold bullion through an ETF like SPDR Gold Shares (GLD), or investing in silver mining companies via Global X Silver Miners ETF (SIL).

The key differences between the two funds lie in their expense ratios and volatility. GLD carries a lower expense ratio of 0.40%, compared to SIL's 0.65%. Additionally, GLD has demonstrated significantly lower volatility with a beta of 0.17, while SIL carries a beta of 0.84.

Investors choosing between the two funds may prioritize the operational leverage of silver miners or the relative price stability of physical gold bullion. While both funds offer exposure to precious metals, they represent distinct asset classes. GLD tracks the price of physical gold, offering a classic hedge against currency devaluation, whereas SIL invests in companies that extract silver, making it more sensitive to corporate earnings and management execution.

Performance-wise, GLD has outperformed SIL over the 5- and 10-year periods, returning 17.5% and 11.3%, respectively, compared to SIL's 14% five-year and 7.6% 10-year annualized returns. However, SIL wins in the 3-year period with a sterling 46% return compared to GLD's 27.7%.
