SK Shipping Set to Dominate Asian LNG Market with H-Line Deal
South Korean shipping company SK Shipping is set to become Asia's largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier operator after an asset swap deal with H-Line Shipping. Under the arrangement, SK Shipping will receive 16 LNG vessels and related long-term contracts from H-Line Shipping in exchange for 12 tankers, long-term contracts, and approximately $300 million in cash.
The transaction is expected to make SK Shipping Asia's largest such operator, while positioning it as the third-largest globally. Following the deal, SK Shipping will operate 32 LNG carriers and 14 liquefied petroleum gas vessels.
Hahn & Co, the private equity firm that controls both companies, plans to rebrand SK Shipping as K-LNG after the deal. H-Line Shipping, on the other hand, will pivot to become a tanker and bulk shipping-focused operator once the asset swap is complete.
