South Africa's Wheat Producers in Crisis as Drought Devastates Swartland

South Africa's wheat producers are facing an extremely difficult production season due to severe rainfall shortages in the Swartland, one of the country's major grain-producing areas. According to Grain SA, a leading industry association, farmers have already lost between 25% and 30% of their potential crop, on top of a decrease in planted hectares.

The situation has exposed a bigger problem: South African grain producers are increasingly expected to carry climate and production risks that have become economically impossible to absorb alone. Grain SA CEO Dr Tobias Doyer warned that the industry cannot continue to regard climate risk as the farmer's problem alone, saying 'Government cannot leave producers to carry this risk alone.'

The Swartland entered the 2026 production season with encouraging rainfall in April and May, but conditions changed dramatically from June to August. During this period, only approximately 43 mm of rain was recorded against a ten-year average of around 202 mm, almost 79% below average.

Farm-level figures supplied by a Swartland producer show that direct input costs increased by approximately 65% between 2016 and 2026, while the estimated farm-gate wheat price increased by only around 36%. Grain SA is calling for affordable and meaningful crop insurance to be made available to dryland producers.
