Southern Copper Touted as Overvalued Despite Strong Earnings
Southern Copper (SCCO) has seen its share price soar in recent months, but analysts now believe it may be overvalued. A $1.10 quarterly dividend was recently approved by the board, which comes after a strong run for the company's shares.
The 90-day share price return of 22.5% and year-to-date share price return of 41.4% demonstrate the significant increase in value over time, with long-term holders enjoying an impressive total shareholder return of 85.2%. However, despite this strong performance, the company's most followed valuation narrative suggests that it is currently 22% above fair value.
The recent dividend decision and substantial capital investments totaling over $15 billion are expected to drive future production growth and boost revenue significantly. The Buenavista zinc concentrator is now operating at full capacity, anticipated to increase zinc production by 31% in 2025 and enhance revenues and net margins due to efficient operations.
An intense US-China trade conflict or sustained cost inflation on materials and operations could quickly weaken the Southern Copper bull case. Analysts warn that these risks must be carefully considered before investing in the company.
