SpaceX Plans Natural Gas Pipeline for Florida Starship Launches
On September 24, 2026, a subsidiary of SpaceX, Coastal Connect Services LLC, filed a request with the Florida Public Service Commission to construct a 32.4-mile, 16-inch natural gas pipeline in Brevard County. The pipeline would connect to Florida Gas Transmission, operated by Energy Transfer LP, to support SpaceX's operations at Cape Canaveral. This move comes as SpaceX seeks a more reliable supply of natural gas to fuel its Starship launches.
Currently, SpaceX relies on trucked deliveries of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from smaller facilities in Florida and other states. The new pipeline would provide a continuous gas supply, though SpaceX would still need to liquefy the gas, requiring additional LNG infrastructure.
The filing follows SpaceX's evaluation of expansion options with companies operating Chesapeake Utilities' pipeline network, including Florida City Gas and Peninsula. In Texas, SpaceX also filed a parallel proposal for an 8-mile pipeline to serve the Boca Chica launch site. Both projects aim to address the growing demand for natural gas as SpaceX scales up its launch operations.
SpaceX and Energy Transfer LP did not respond to requests for comment, and NASA also provided no response when asked about the pipeline effort. The company has also begun recruiting natural gas traders in Texas and Florida to manage the supply chain.
