SpaceX pushes for Florida pipeline to fuel Cape Canaveral rocket launches
Elon Musk’s SpaceX is pursuing approval to construct a natural gas pipeline in Florida to support its rocket launches from Cape Canaveral. The company’s subsidiary, Coastal Connect Services (CCS), has submitted a request to the Florida Public Service Commission for approval of a tariff covering a 32.4-mile, 16-inch pipeline in Brevard County. The project aims to provide a stable supply of natural gas, which SpaceX uses in liquid methane form as a propellant for its Starship rockets.
The proposed pipeline would connect to the existing Florida Gas Transmission (FGT) interstate pipeline, ensuring reliable fuel delivery. According to the filing, current truck-based supply methods and local pipelines cannot meet SpaceX’s growing needs at the launch site. The company argues that the pipeline is essential for safe, timely, and efficient natural gas delivery.
SpaceX’s move into natural gas infrastructure reflects its broader strategy of controlling its supply chain to enhance operational efficiency. The company has already requested a similar 8-mile pipeline for its Boca Chica launch site in South Texas. Additionally, SpaceX has begun hiring natural gas traders to secure a cost-effective fuel supply for its launches in both Florida and Texas.
SpaceX did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters. The company’s capital-intensive approach to supply chain management has been a key factor in its competitive edge in rocket and spacecraft development.
