Sri Lanka Monitors Iranian Oil Tankers Amid US Blockade

The Government of Sri Lanka is monitoring nearly 20 Iranian oil tankers anchored near its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Media Director General, Thushara Rodrigo. These vessels are unable to sail to their home ports due to a naval blockade imposed by the United States.

TankerTrackers website reports that around 13 of these oil tankers and several 'shadow fleet' vessels are seeking safety near Sri Lanka's EEZ. However, it is noted that these vessels currently carry no fuel.

The risk of attacks on these vessels is highlighted following an incident last March in which an American submarine reportedly struck and sank the vessel 'IRIS Dena' just 19 nautical miles off the coast of Sri Lanka.
