Stocks Soar as Oil Prices Drop and Bond Yields Ease
The US stock market experienced its best day in six weeks on Thursday, following a significant drop in oil prices and easing pressure from the bond market.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index jumped 1.1% for just its second rise in the last nine days, while the Dow Jones industrial average added 316 points or 0.6%, and the Nasdaq composite climbed 1.7%.
The drop in oil prices, specifically Brent crude, which fell 1% to settle at $104.82, helped alleviate pressure on stocks and bond yields. The yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 4.93% from 5.01% late Wednesday, making borrowing more expensive for individuals and businesses.
The Federal Reserve's decision to raise short-term interest rates by a quarter of a percentage point also contributed to the market's rally, as it signaled confidence in their commitment to controlling inflation.
