Strait of Hormuz Remains Critical Chokepoint Amid US-Iran Stalemate
The Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil supply, remains a chokepoint despite claims by President Donald Trump that the US has total control over it. The International Energy Agency (IEA) warns that the ongoing stalemate between the US and Iran could keep oil supply tight through the rest of 2023 before a potential recovery in 2027.
The IEA notes that the continued closure of the Strait disrupts international supply chains and curtails product availability. However, it also reports that global oil supplies actually rose in July, but remain 6.3 million barrels per day below last year's levels.
Energy prices have fallen for the second straight month, with a 1.5% decline in July following four months of increases. The annual inflation rate was 3.4%, down from 3.5% a month earlier. However, energy prices are still up nearly 11% since the war in Iran began in late February.
