Syria Reconnects with Iraq on Oil Exports Amid Iran Tensions
Syria is reviving an old oil export route to connect Iraqi fields to its Mediterranean ports, announced transitional President Ahmad Al-Sharaa in New York. This comes amid disruptions to regional shipping due to the US war with Iran.
The new project aims to provide 'safe passage' through Syrian territory for Iraqi goods, including oil products. An oil link between the two countries operated since the 1950s but deteriorated during political tensions. Al-Sharaa said they are trying to reform past problems and improve relations.
Iraq has sought to diversify its crude exports due to Hormuz disruptions, turning to Syria and Turkey as alternatives. On the other hand, Al-Sharaa linked Iraq's 'heavy heritage' from the US-led war to Iranian influence within parts of the state. He also mentioned armed groups operating outside institutions and Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi's efforts to bring them under control.
