Tenerife Port Introduces Land-Based LNG Supply for Ships

The Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has introduced a new modality for supplying liquefied natural gas (LNG) to ships, marking a significant step towards sustainability and innovation in maritime transport. The first operation using this method was carried out on the Baleària shipping group's fast ferry Mercedes Pinto, which received 600 MWh of LNG supplied by two tanker trucks.

The Multi Truck to Ship (MTTS) modality allows for simultaneous supply from multiple trucks to the ship's tanks, increasing efficiency and reducing risks. This new method complements existing options, including the Ship to Ship (STS) method, which enables fuel transfer between ships.

The implementation of this operation was made possible through coordination between the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Baleària, ESK, and other stakeholders. The Mercedes Pinto, with its dual engines capable of running on natural gas and biogas, is one of 12 eco-efficient vessels in Baleària's fleet.

The introduction of this new modality aligns with Baleària's decarbonization roadmap, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife continues to advance in sustainability and innovation, adapting to the evolving needs of maritime transport.
