Theta Gold Mines Secures Funding for South African Gold Mine
Theta Gold Mines (ASX:TGM) is an ASX-listed gold developer that has secured US$90 million in funding for its Transvaal Gold Mining Estates project in South Africa's Mpumalanga province. The company settled a senior secured bond and raised an additional US$18.6 million through equity and option exercises, bringing the total funding to date to over US$108.6 million. Construction on the TGME project is underway, with management targeting first gold production in Q1 2027.
The project has a substantial resource base of 6.1 million ounces of gold, with modelled all-in sustaining costs of US$834 per ounce. This suggests that Theta Gold Mines will have significant margins and rapid payback, making it an attractive investment opportunity for those who believe in the continued strength of the gold price.
However, the company's shares have underperformed the broader Australian metals and mining sector over the past year, rising only 8.8% compared to a 38% gain for the sector as a whole. This has led some investors to question why Theta Gold Mines is lagging behind its peers.
The most plausible explanation for this underperformance is the company's capital structure, which includes a senior secured bond that ranks ahead of shareholders and must be serviced before the project generates any cash flow. Additionally, the ongoing expansion of the share register through repeated equity top-ups has diluted existing shareholders and added to their leverage.
