Trump and Iran Both Reject Election Influence on War Decisions

President Donald Trump and Iran’s leadership both maintain that the U.S. election calendar isn’t influencing their decisions regarding the ongoing war, which has persisted for seven months. Despite widespread American disapproval of the conflict, fueled by inflation and high gas prices, Trump has insisted that his approach to Iran is not driven by election considerations. He has even declared that the U.S. “will not be attacking Iran at any time prior” to the November 3 election, while also threatening to “finish it off” if Iran doesn’t capitulate.

Iranian officials, meanwhile, demand that the U.S. lift its naval blockade and deliver sanctions relief before any deal can be reached. Trump’s shifting war goals, from demanding unconditional surrender to focusing on economic pressure and containing Tehran’s nuclear program, have shown little success in breaking Iran’s resilience. Despite significant economic and military setbacks, Iran has refused to yield, with some officials predicting that full-scale war may resume.

The war’s impact on U.S. politics is profound. A recent poll found that 69% of Americans believe the war has not been worth fighting, and only 28% approve of Trump’s handling of Iran. Some Republican candidates are struggling to distance themselves from Trump’s stance, with several expressing frustration over elevated gas prices and food costs. However, analysts suggest that separating from Trump’s position so close to Election Day will be extremely difficult for Republicans.

Diplomatic efforts remain fraught with tension. After Trump rejected Iran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, indirect negotiations have resumed, with Iran expecting to offer a formal reply soon. However, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed skepticism, noting that past talks have often been followed by U.S. attacks. Meanwhile, fighting between Saudi Arabia and Iran-backed Houthi rebels in the Bab el-Mandeb strait has further complicated the situation, disrupting oil and trade routes.
