Trump Announces US-Iran Talks as Oil Prices Plummet Amid Middle East Uncertainty
Oil prices plummeted on Monday after US President Donald Trump announced that negotiations with Iran would begin, but Tehran denied any plans for talks.
The situation is causing confusion in the Middle East as Trump stated that a new round of negotiations would address Iran's denuclearization and the free passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint for global trade.
However, Iranian officials insisted that they are only negotiating with Oman to ensure safe passage through the strait and not with Washington.
Oil prices fell by about 5%, with Brent crude dropping 4.69% to $83.81 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate falling 4.67% to $80.72.
