Trump Claims Iran Will Give Up Amid Tensions Over Strait of Hormuz
US President Donald Trump made several claims about Iran and the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday. He stated that 'they will give up' and claimed that the US had taken more oil out of the Strait than at any point in history over the previous couple of days.
The remarks came after a luncheon with leading technology company executives, where Trump discussed advanced artificial intelligence and signed a joint commitment on the safety of frontier computing models. The document establishes four layers of controls and audits to govern the safety of these models.
Tehran was not pleased with Trump's comments, however. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned that if Iran's security is not ensured, 'no infrastructure will be safe'. He linked regional security to oil movement and stated that the US should know: 'As we said before, in a region where we do not sell oil, no one will sell oil.'
Ghalibaf was reacting to Trump's earlier remarks on the Strait of Hormuz. The two sides are still engaged in diplomatic talks. A US official had previously stated that President Trump is willing to give Iran sanctions relief and release frozen funds if Tehran offers 'concrete progress' on the nuclear issue.
