Trump Rejects Iranian Proposal to Reopen Strait of Hormuz within Seven Days

US President Donald Trump has rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the strait of Hormuz within seven days and resume nuclear talks in return for the lifting of the US naval blockade of Iranian ports.

The proposal, made by Iran's president Masoud Pezeshkian during a meeting at the UN general assembly in New York earlier this week, included reopening the strait, which would have relieved pressure on global energy markets, and restarting talks on Iran's nuclear programme within seven days.

In return, Iran wants the US to permit the release of some of its frozen assets, restore the waiver that lifted sanctions on Iran's oil exports, and observe a 'ceasefire on all fronts', including an end to Israel's attacks on Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Trump told reporters at the White House that he had rejected the proposal, saying 'They made a proposal but I reject it.' US officials had earlier expressed private scepticism about Iran's willingness to meet Trump's demands to dismantle its nuclear programme.
