Trump Rejects Iran's Plan for Strait of Hormuz Ceasefire

US President Donald Trump has rejected Iran's proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and stop the fighting in the Middle East. The war, now in its seventh month, has disrupted oil shipments through one of the world's busiest waterways.

The plan, put forth by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, would have allowed for a seven-day countdown toward opening the strait and pausing the region's fighting after a deal was struck. Broader talks, including on Iran's nuclear program, were to follow once both sides agreed on the surrounding issues.

Trump claimed that Iran wanted to make a deal, but only if it could immediately open the Strait of Hormuz, as proceeds from the strait would otherwise flow straight into Tehran's coffers. 'They want a deal that would open the strait right away,' Trump said.
