Trump Rejects Iran's Proposal Over Unacceptable Terms
US President Donald Trump has rejected Iran's proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and restart nuclear negotiations, calling the terms unacceptable. The plan, presented by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi during the UN General Assembly in New York this week, would have seen Tehran reopen the strait and resume talks over its nuclear program if the US lifted its naval blockade, eased restrictions on Iranian oil exports, released frozen assets, and observed a ceasefire.
'They want to make a deal where they open the strait immediately because they're losing so badly,' Trump said. 'That's not a deal I'm going to make.' The President argued that Iran had outsmarted itself by restricting traffic through the strategic waterway, allowing the US to impose a blockade and depriving Tehran of oil revenues.
Araghchi said Tehran took note of Trump's public rejection but is still waiting for a formal response. 'If the necessary conditions are met, the strait can be reopened and normal maritime passage restored within seven days,' he previously stated.
