Trump Renames Strait of Hormuz Amid Ongoing Iran Tensions

US President Donald Trump has reignited tensions with Iran by sharing a map on his Truth Social platform labeling the Strait of Hormuz as 'Trump Strait', sparking concerns over global energy supplies.

The move comes after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi proposed a seven-day plan to restore normal passage through the strait, which would include lifting US sanctions and observing a ceasefire in Lebanon. However, Trump has rejected this proposal and expressed doubts over Iran's commitment to its nuclear programme.

This is not the first time Trump has claimed control over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint that handles around one-fifth of global traded oil and gas. In August, he shared maps referring to the waterway as 'new U.S. territory' and stated the US had 'total control' of the strait.

The ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran have disrupted shipping through the strait, affecting energy markets and raising concerns over global oil supplies.
