US futures have edged higher after President Donald Trump revealed that officials from the US and Iran met on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York this week.

The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average both gained 0.1% on Wednesday, while Nasdaq futures were flat.

Trump's comments came after he told the assembly that he would have to make a choice between reaching an agreement with Iran or 'annihilating' the Islamic Republic.

Oil prices declined, with Brent crude dipping 0.3% to $98.99 per barrel and US crude dropping 1.1% to $89.84 per barrel.

The decline in oil prices was also attributed to reports that Saudi Arabia was working to restore its east-west pipeline, which was disabled in an attack.
