Trump Suggests Restricting Diesel Exports to Europe
Europe's reliance on US energy exports has introduced new vulnerabilities to the continent. The US president, Donald Trump, has indicated he may support a ban or quantitative restriction on US diesel exports.
This move marks a reversal in the logic of Trump's 'energy dominance' strategy, which has presented abundant US energy exports as a source of economic and geopolitical leverage since his first term in the White House. He repeatedly encouraged European allies to replace Russian energy with US supply after his 2024 re-election.
The US administration explicitly identifies crude oil, refined petroleum products, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) as instruments of US economic and national security. The 2025 US-EU trade framework also envisions substantial additional European purchases of US energy.
