Trump Targets Canada's Crude Oil Exports in Bid for Control
President Trump has made it clear that he wants control over the Western Hemisphere. He demonstrated this in Venezuela, seizing its president and imposing an unelected government to gain access to 65 billion barrels of crude oil reserves.
In his pursuit of control, Trump has also meddled in Argentina's recent elections and imposed oil blockades on Cuba and Iran.
Now, he wants more. He has threatened military action to seize Greenland from Denmark and make Canada the 51st state using economic force if necessary.
To achieve this goal, Trump is leveraging Canada's most valuable export: crude oil. According to data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), between 2000 and 2025, the United States reduced its imports of crude oil by about one billion barrels, but still imported over 1.43 billion barrels from Canada.
Canada is planning to increase its crude oil production for both domestic and foreign markets, with non-US exports increasing from less than 1% in the early 2000s to over 10% by 2025.
