Trump Threatens Higher Costs for South Korea Over Alaska LNG Investment
US President Donald Trump has been making unilateral announcements about South Korean investment in various projects ahead of the US midterms, and his latest move is no exception. On Friday, he openly pressured Seoul to participate in the Alaska liquefied natural gas project, threatening that if it did not commit to the investment soon, it would face greater costs.
Speaking at a press conference at the White House, Trump pushed back against a question suggesting his earlier announcement had been premature. He stated that there was a Korean delegation present when he made the initial announcement, and maintained that his earlier statement was not incorrect.
However, analysts say that if South Korea continues to push back on the project, it could face higher tariffs or demands for a larger investment commitment. Trump did not specify what exactly he would double or charge more of, but warned Seoul that 'if they don't agree, I'll double it.'
