Trump Threatens Higher Costs for South Korea Over Alaska LNG Project
US President Donald Trump has threatened to increase costs for South Korea if it doesn't agree to invest in an Alaska liquefied natural gas (LNG) project. The LNG project involves a 1,298-kilometre-long pipeline from the North Slope to southern Alaska, where natural gas will be cooled into liquid form and shipped to Asia.
Trump made these comments during a press availability at the White House on Friday. He said that if South Korea doesn't sign up for the project, 'I'll just charge them more.' When asked by a reporter whether they had signed up, Trump responded, 'Tell them if they don't sign shortly, I'm going to double it up.'
The US Commerce Secretary, Howard Lutnick, has stated that South Korea will invest over $50 billion in the Alaska project. However, Seoul has yet to finalise its decision on participating.
