Pampa Energía Eyes Data Center Opportunity in Vaca Muerta
Pampa Energía has announced its availability to power a data center in Vaca Muerta, Argentina's largest shale play. The company's Chairman, Marcelo Mindlin, stated that they have 800 megawatts of power generation available for the project.
Mindlin also highlighted the growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) as a new opportunity to add value to gas from Vaca Muerta. He noted that Pampa already adds value to its gas through two businesses: Transportadora de Gas del Sur, which processes natural gas liquids, and Fértil Pampa, a $2.7 billion urea plant currently under construction.
The International Energy Agency estimates that data centers will consume about 945 terawatt-hours of electricity by 2030, with AI as the main driver. This growing power demand makes abundant, competitive, and reliable power a crucial factor in where data centers are built.
