Trump Threatens Key Oil Export Hub as U.S.-Iran Tensions Escalate

U.S.-Iran hostilities escalated over the weekend after both countries exchanged strikes for the first time in more than a month. The U.S. targeted two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island, claiming they were preparing to launch rockets carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz.

The incident led President Donald Trump to threaten Kharg Island, from which around 80% of Iran's oil exports are shipped. He shared an AI-made video showing the island 'being blown to smithereens,' with a caption claiming it was a demonstration of what would happen if Tehran continued to provoke Washington.

The U.S. has been enforcing a naval blockade on Iranian ports, leading to a sharp plunge in its oil exports. Data shows that Iran's exports have plummeted by more than 80% compared to the same month last year, with only 260,000 barrels per day being loaded so far this month.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced plans to impose secondary sanctions on those 'enabling' Iran to maintain its economic activity. He also revealed that another bank would be sanctioned this week as part of the administration's efforts to intensify economic pressure on Tehran.
